"I would like to thank the people of Delhi. This is the victory of PM Modi. We had contested the election under his leadership. Following my resignation (from AAP), I had said that this is not the same AAP that it was in 2015, and people of Delhi have given an answer to this," said BJP's Bijwasan candidate Kailash Gahlot. He won the election.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has handed the Aam Aadmi Party a stunning defeat in the Delhi assembly elections to return to power in the national capital after 27 years. As of 2:30 pm on Saturday, the BJP had won 11 out of the 70 seats in the legislative assembly and was leading in 37, according to the Election Commission of India.
The AAP secured 10 seats and was ahead in 12, while the Congress drew a blank. As compared to the last assembly polls in 2020, the BJP improved its vote share by 8 percentage points to 45.95% while the AAP’s vote share eroded by 10 percentage points to 43.68%, as per the trends shared by ECI so far.

General Administration Department, Government of Delhi has issued a notice to address security concerns and the safety of records, saying no files or documents, computer hardware etc. can be taken outside Delhi Secretariat complex without permission from GAD.
"It is therefore directed that necessary directions may be issued to the concerned Branch In-charges under the Departments/Offices situated in Delhi Secretariat to ensure safety of records, files, documents, electronic files etc. under their section/branches," reads the notice
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reacted to BJP's win in Delhi assembly election.
"Modi in the heart of Delhi… The people of Delhi have worked to make Delhi Aapda-free by destroying the 'Sheeshmahal' of lies, deceit and corruption. Delhi has taught such a lesson to those who break promises that it will set an example for those who make false promises to the public across the country. This is the beginning of a new era of development and trust in Delhi," he said in a post on X.
"Under the leadership of Modiji, BJP is determined to fulfill all its promises and make Delhi the number 1 capital of the world," he added.

Delhi CM Atishi has clinched a narrow lead of nearly 1,000 votes over BJP rival Ramesh Bidhuri as of 10th round of counting out of 12. He has garnered 41,530 votes so far.
Former CM Arvind Kejriwal is likely to lose from his New Delhi constituency.
After the 11th round of counting, he is behind by 3,000 votes against BJP's Parvesh Sahib Singh.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed happiness over the BJP's certain win in the Delhi assembly election. "Indeed happy to know that BJP is leading. Under PM Modi's leadership, we are very keen that Delhi gets govt which serves its people," she said.

Congress candidate from New Delhi constituency Sandeep Dikshit said the BJP is likely to form government in the state.
"Our only disappointment is that we didn’t get the votes as per what we were expecting. In New Delhi constituency, neck and neck fight is going on between Arvind Kejriwal and Parvesh Verma," he told PTI.

Social activist Anna Hazare took a dig at Arvind Kejriwal as the AAP wavered in the Delhi assembly election.
"I have always said that a candidate's conduct, thoughts should be pure, life should be without a blame, and sacrifice should be there... these qualities let voters have faith on him. I told this (to Arvind Kejriwal) but he did not pay heed, and finally, he focused on liquor... why did this issue raise? He was overwhelmed by money power," Hazare said, reported PTI.
Kejriwal worked under Hazare in 2011 during the 'India Against Corruption' movement. Ties soured over political difference soon after.

The BJP candidate Parvesh Sahib Singh is back in the lead over former AAP CM Arvind Kejriwal in the prestigious New Delhi seat. He is leading by 225 votes as of 11:05 a.m.
As the BJP looks set to trounce AAP to win Delhi assembly election, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took a dig at INDIA allies AAP and Congress.
"Aur lado aapas mein!!! (Continue fighting with each other)" he said in a post on social media platform X.
Delhi Chief Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi is trailing from her incumbent seat of Kalkaji, where she was challenged by former Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Ramesh Bidhuri.
Bidhuri is ahead by a margin of 1,342 votes, as per the data available on the Election Commission of India's website as of 10:15 a.m. The BJP candidate has so far secured 8,807 votes, as against 7,465 votes.
The outcome, however, could change given the narrow difference margin, and the fact that 10 rounds of counting of votes are still left.

To start with, the AAP has pushed major welfare initiatives like cash handouts for youth and women — in a city whose per capita income of Rs 4.61 lakh is more than double the national average of Rs 2.12 lakh.
The party has been promoting the 'Delhi model' of governance since the last election — laying focus on improved public health and education services that are seen benefitting middle and lower income families.
The BJP has also promised a slew of welfare handouts for many socio-economic classes. But its sharpest political narrative has been allegations of corruption against senior AAP leaders like Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, both of whom have spent jail time in the Delhi liquor policy case.
The Congress, struggling to stay relevant for the past decade following the end of its 15-year reign under former CM Sheila Dixit, has also raised the welfare flag with fiscally expensive promises. The party is seen to be lacking organisational muscle in Delhi.

Aam Aadmi Party's Saurabh Bharadwaj ha taken a lead in the high profile Greater Kailash.
BJP MLA candidate Shikha Rai said she is confident that the BJP will form the government with a huge majority. "The allegations levelled by the AAP are proof that they are losing the elections... The people of Delhi also want development like the other states that have a double-engine government," she told ANI.
Former CM and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal is trailing BJP's Parvesh Sahib Singh as of 9:00 a.m.
BJP's Satish Upadhyay is leading from Malaviya Nagar in early leads. So is Om Prakash Sharma in Vishwas Nagar and Sanjay Goyal in Shahdara.
Incumbent AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, meanwhile, expressed confidence that his party will retain the seat. "I have served the people for 11 years, hence, I am neither worried about the elections nor the results. The exit polls are made in BJP headquarters, there is nothing to worry about," he told ANI.
Election officials have opened EVMs as the counting of votes is underway amid tight security.
AAP's Manish Sisodia, who was earlier the deputy CM, is making his debut from the Jangpura constituency, that was previously won by AAP candidate Praveen Kumar in 2015 and 2020. Sisodia is all set to face off against BJP's Sardar Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Congress' Farhad Suri.
Ahead of results, Sisodia offered prayers at Swami Narayan temple and later said: "I feel that working for education is like serving God. I am sure that with God's grace we will be blessed again to serve children."
Notably, exit poll numbers are based on analysis and research by the respective agencies.

Its 8:00 a.m. and the counting of votes for the Delhi assembly election has commenced. The initial round will have postal ballots being tallied, following which initial trends across 70 seats will emerge.
According to the Conduct of Election Rules, postal ballots will be counted first and the process of counting of votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs) begin 30 minutes later. After that, counting of votes cast through postal ballots and EVMs will continue simultaneously.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi said this is not an ordinary election but a fight between good and evil. "I am confident that the people of Delhi will stand with the good, AAP and Arvind Kejriwal. He will become the CM for the fourth time," she told reporters.

The voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly concluded on Wednesday. About 699 candidates across 70 constituencies were in the fray for the Feb. 5 elections.
Delhi recorded 60.10% voter turnout in the assembly polls on Wednesday. The turnout almost touched what it was in the 2020 assembly polls (62.59%) when the Arvind Kejriwal-led party won 62 seat of the 70 seats, while the BJP got eight and the Congress zero.
The Delhi assembly election is a triangular contest between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress.
Although AAP and Congress are part of the opposition INDIA alliance nationally, they will fight against each other in Delhi.
Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has been in power with a thumping majority since 2015.
The BJP last held power between 1993-1998, while the Congress nearly evaporated after its 15-year reign under former CM Sheila Dixit ended in 2013.
