Bengal Election 2026
The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the dates for the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal among other states. The polls in WB would be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress is currently in power in the state. The supremo is eyeing a fourth consecutive term in power, while the opposition BJP is going all-out to turn the tables. The elections in Bengal are being held in the aftermath of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which became a subject of intense politicking and also reached the Supreme Court.
In simple terms, SIR is a more thorough version of voter-list revision that goes beyond regular updates. It involves house-to-house enumeration and provides fresh verification to ensure that only eligible voters are registered, while those who are ineligible — duplicate, migrated or dead — are removed.
