India's consumer durables industry is entering a high-growth phase, with the market projected to expand 8-10% annually through 2030 and reach Rs 3-3.25 lakh crore, according to a joint report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The report, launched at the CII Consumer Electronics & Durables Summit, also estimates that this expansion could create an additional Rs 40,000-50,000 crore opportunity for domestic value addition.

The growth is expected to be supported by rising household incomes, greater access to consumer financing, increasing premiumisation, replacement demand and the continued shift towards nuclear families. Low penetration of major appliances also leaves considerable room for expansion in the domestic market.

Current bill-of-materials localisation ranges be‍tween 25% and 70% across major categories. Televisions and room air conditioners remain at the lower end, while refrigerators and washing machines have relatively higher domestic sourcing.

Key areas where import ‍dependence remains significant include TV display panels, air-conditioner compressors, refrigerator insulation and washing-machine motors. Technology access, ma‌nufacturing scale and cost competitiveness are among the major hurdles to deeper localisation.

The report estimates that domestic value addition could rise from around 50-55% currently to 65-70% b‌y 2030 as component capacity expands.

India's export opportuni‌ty is also substantial. Despite growing production, the country accounts for less than 1% ‍of global consumer durables trade.

The report called for stronger manufacturing clusters, technology partnerships, better testing and certification infrastructure, improved logistics and greater investment in R&D to build global competitiveness.

It also highlighted AI adoption, including generative and agentic AI, as a potential productivity lever across manufacturing, supply chains, product development and customer service.
