From what was once a mundane must-do chore of keeping mobile phones on charge overnight to getting a fully-charged device in just 36 minutes, smartphone charging has come a long way. Besides a top-notch camera and larger-than-life displays, battery capacity and charging have become key consideration factors among consumers today. In fact, a latest report highlights that up to 61% of buyers consider smart charging essential when purchasing a new smartphone.
In recent years, smartphone brands have made several strides on the product and feature front. When it comes to charging technology, however, one name stands out for its relentless R&D and innovation. OPPO — with its 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 technology, the ‘fastest’ fast charging technology commercially available till date in India, has set new industry benchmarks by leading the fast-charging revolution worldwide.
Since 2019, OPPO has invested over $1.4 billion in furthering technology innovations, and the brand’s India R&D centre is known for its work on SuperVOOC fast-charging technology. Committed to improving user experience across its devices, OPPO’s dedication to safe and fast charging was one of the key ways through which the brand has differentiated itself from other smartphone brands in the market.
OPPO introduced its first smartphone with VOOC Flash Charge technology back in 2014, the Find 7. In 2018, the SuperVOOC Flash Charge in the Find X AutomobilLamborghini Edition made headlines, while the Reno series saw the evolution of VOOC 3.0 and VOOC 4.0. As of 2020, the number of global VOOC flash charging users has exceeded 157 million, with the brand securing more than 1,700 patents worldwide in flash charging technology.
Today, the brand’s fastest charging tech—the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0—can be seen in the OPPO Find X2 Series and the deeply stylish Reno4 Pro.
Behind OPPO’s leadership in mobile fast charging lies a clear understanding of the modern consumer. Given how reliant we are on our smartphones today, it goes without saying that better battery life and fast-charging options allow us to use our devices on-the-go and to their fullest potential. What makes OPPO stand apart, however, is the brand’s commitment to not just speed, but also safety. To provide an example, OPPO’s 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging system has five layers of safety protection, from the charger, adapter, cable and smartphone, right down to the battery itself. These protection chipsets monitor voltage and current at each node, making it not just a super-fast, but also a super-safe charge. This revolutionary technology has also made its way to OPPO’s premium Reno4 Pro, making it the first device in the segment to boast of this technology. The Reno4 Pro has also received the respected TÜV Rheinland Safe Fast-Charge System Certification.
So, how exactly does fast charging work, how did OPPO come to lead fast charging, and how come all handsets do not come with the feature?
For this, we caught up with Mr. Tasleem Arif, Vice President, R&D Head, OPPO India, at the brand’s R&D centre in Hyderabad to get a deeper understanding of the complex and cutting-edge work being done in this space. Joining him in this technology-focused conversation were Mr. Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research, who brings deep insights into the smartphone consumer landscape in India, and senior technology journalist and influencer Mr. Siddhartha Sharma, who has tested all aspects of the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging in the Reno4 Pro.
Together, they give us an insight into the evolution of mobile charging and user experience, as well as provide a glimpse into what is coming next, as OPPO continues to push the envelope and disrupt the charging tech landscape faster than any other brand.
