The US states of Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania are currently holding their primary elections on Tuesday, where voters decide which candidate will be representing their political party in the upcoming midterm elections.
Citizens of these states will decide the party representative that will run for elections with regards to the US Senate (Upper House), US House of Representatives (Lower House) and other states representing public offices.
As the US has a federal government, the US Senate tends to have more institutional influence for decision making in comparison to the House of Representatives.
NDTV Profit breaks down the key candidates to watch for each state:
Pennsylvania
The primary elections in Pennsylvania are geared around who the Democrats and the Republicans will put forth as their candidates for the positions of the House of Representatives, Governor and Lieutenant Governor among others.
Widely considered to be a swing state, Pennsylvania sees incumbent Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro running largely unopposed and is poised to win the primaries. On the Republican front, Treasurer Stacy Garrity is a frontrunner for the elections, also running without opposition.

Shapiro and Garrity are set to face off against each other for the position of Governor of Pennsylvania in the midterm elections.
As for the Democratic primaries for the House of Representatives, Philadelphia is a key district to watch, with a close, three-way competition between State Representative Chris Rabb, ex-health official Ala Stanford and State Senator Sharif Street.
Kentucky
Kentucky is having its primaries centred around who will be in the running for the Senate and House Of Representatives. The Senate seat of prominent Republican senator Mitch McConnell who has occupied it since 1985, will be vacated in 2027, as the 84 will be retiring.
Key candidates from the Republican side include U.S. Representative Andy Barr, endorsed by Donald Trump facing off against ex-state Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
From the Democrat's side, Charles Booker, a former State representative, will be competing for candidacy against ex-marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath. The two had run against each other in 2020, with the latter winning, but ultimately losing against McConnell for the Senator position.
Georgia
Georgia's primaries are focused on electing the candidates to run for the positions of Governor, Senate, House of Reps., Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State and State Supreme Court.
On the Democrat corner for running for Governor, Ex-Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, endorsed by former US President Joe Biden, will be competing against former Republican-turned Democrat Geoff Duncan, best known for speaking out against Trump when he alleged that 2020 election was "stolen", leading to him quitting the Grand Old Party.
Other candidates in the running include ex-State Senator Jason Esteves and DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mike Thurmond.
On the Republican side for Governor Candidacy, Brad Raffensperger, who like Duncan, also did not publicly agree with Trump's election theft allegations, will be running against Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and healthcare exec Rick Jackson.
Alabama
Alabama's primaries will be covering the candidates to run for the positions of Governor, Senate, House, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State.
The Senate election is being watched closely with the Trump-endorsed US Representative Barry Moore will be having a close competition with former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson and Attorney General Steve Marshall.
Alabama is a Republican stronghold with Democrat candidates, Kyle Sweetser, Dakarai Larriet, Mark Wheeler II and Everett Weiss in the running to compete for the Senate seat.
Sweetster like Geoff Duncan is a former Republican who voiced opposition against Donald Trump.
Idaho
Idaho's primaries will involve the candidates in the running for the positions of Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State. The state is another safe seat for Republicans with all eyes on the race for Governor.
Incumbent Governor Brad Little will be running, having that brunt of the party's influence behind him, against other smaller candidates such as former police officer and bar owner Mark Fitzpatrick.
Chanelle Torrez, Jill Kirkham, Maxine Durand, and Terri Pickens will be competing for the Democrat candidacy for Governor.

Oregon
Oregon voters will be participating in the primary elections to determine the Democratic and Republican nominees for races including Governor, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives offices.
The Governor's race is the most prominent in the state. Incumbent Democrat Governor Tina Kotek, is running for reelection regarding a second term despite low approval ratings. Republican candidates to watch include former NBA athlete Chris Dudley, state Senator Christine Drazan and State Representative Ed Diehl.
