The US Justice Department on Friday, Jan. 30, released a large batch of newly declassified files linked to its investigation into financier Jeffrey Epstein, in what has been described as the largest-ever public disclosure of records tied to the late convicted sex offender. It includes three million pages, 180,000 images and 2,000 videos.
The release has sparked widespread attention, with the documents naming several high-profile figures.
Donald Trump
Among the newly released Epstein files are claims of abuse linked to parties at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, with the US President named in internal summaries. The files indicate that Trump hosted parties at Mar-a-Lago that were attended by high-profile figures, including Elon Musk, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump. One summary states: “[redacted] reported an unidentified female friend who was forced to perform oral sex on President Trump approximately 25 years ago in NJ [New Jersey]. The friend told Alexis that she was approximately 13-14 years old when this occurred and that the friend allegedly bit President Trump while performing oral sex. The friend was allegedly hit in the face after she laughed about biting President Trump. The friend said she was also abused by Epstein.”
Another internal summary similarly details allegations involving a teenager, around 13-14 years old, who was “forced to perform ‘oral sex' and allegedly bit President Trump.” Authorities have reiterated that these are summaries of reports and not verified evidence.
Bill Gates
The DOJ release also revives claims involving Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, including allegations concerning an alleged sexually transmitted disease. Among the documents are draft emails that appear to have been written by Epstein and focus on Gates, with claims accusing him of attempting to conceal an STD from his then-wife, Melinda Gates, following alleged sexual encounters with women described as “Russian girls.”
The draft emails appear to be framed as a statement on behalf of Gates' longtime science adviser, Boris Nikolic, and include allegations ranging from assisting with drugs to facilitating meetings. One email reads, From helping Bill to get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with Russian girls, to facilitating his illicit trysts, with married women, to being asked to provide adderall fro [sic] bridge tournaments I feel I owe it to my friends and futre [sic] colleagues to admit a moral failure, to ask forgiveness and to move on with my life.”
In a separate draft email addressed to Gates, Epstein accused the billionaire of attempting to stage a “cover up” to protect his public image. The draft stated, “[You] implore me to please delete the emails regarding your STD [sic], your request that I provide you antibiotics that you can surreptitiously give to Melinda...”
The draft also warned of potential fallout if Melinda Gates were to file for a public divorce, suggesting it could impact a pledge programme. It stated, “I am concerned that if Melinda decides as you said to file for a public divorce, the damage done to the pledge programme alone would result in billions of dollars of money no longer being used for social good as Im [sic] sure that some wives and husbands would feel free to retreat from their commitments.”
The document release also revisits reports that Epstein threatened to expose Gates' alleged affair with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova in 2017, with previous reporting suggesting the threat followed Gates declining to participate in a charitable fund Epstein had launched with JP Morgan Chase.
Mira Nair
Indian-origin filmmaker Mira Nair, the mother of New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, is also among the names that appear in the files. She is mentioned as having been among guests at a film party hosted at Epstein's partner Ghislaine Maxwell's home, according to an email dating back to 2009 sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein.
According to a screenshot of the files released by the Department of Justice and reported by the Daily Mail, the email is dated October 21, 2009, and was sent to the address jeevacation@gmail.com. While the title and subject of the email are not disclosed, the body reads, “Just left Ghislaine's townhouse…after party for film. Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos were there…Jean Pigozzi, director Mira Nair….etc.”
Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
