In a blog post, Sasha Kapur, Product Manager at Google Translate, highlighted that this feature, leveraging Google's Gemini AI, turns any pair of headphones into a real-time, one-way translation device. While doing so, it keeps each the speaker's tone, emphasis, and cadence intact, making it easier to follow the conversation and understand who's saying what.

"Live translate is a game-changer for getting recommendations, listening to train announcements and connecting with fellow travelers. Because it preserves the original speaker's tone and cadence, I'm not just getting the exact words, but also the vibe of the city and the people who make it special," Kapur said.

The tech giant suggested that users can utilise this feature to do various things, such as following dinnertime conversations with relatives, who speak another language, or to understand train announcements when travelling in a different country.

"Dinners with my aunts and uncles chatting in Punjabi used to feel a bit like watching a movie without the subtitles. With Live translate, I can keep up with the conversation and jokes in real-time," Kapur added.

Notably, Google introduced Live translate with headphones last year in beta. At that time, the company promised to “preserve the tone, emphasis and cadence of each speaker to create more natural translations and make it easier to follow along with who said what”.
