Nearly two years after Elon Musk took over social media platform Twitter and rebranded it as X, the billionaire has hinted at competing with Gmail—the email platform of Google's parent Alphabet Inc.

In a series of posts since Sunday, Musk has indicated his plans to launch an email service that could serve as a simpler alternative to Gmail.

The speculations were triggered after an X user said that using an @‌x.‌com email address is the only way he could stop using Gmail. Responding to the tweet, Musk posted: "Interesting. We need to rethink how messaging, including email, works overall."

This sparked a buzz around the possible launch of Xmail—an email platform linked to X. Although Musk did not officially confirm the same, he responded positively to X users who claimed that Xmail would take on Gmail.

X user Alex Finn, in a post, said, "An X email service is coming, and it's going to be MASSIVE. Here's exactly how it's going to work: Your X account will act as your email address. People can then email your X account, and it will go directly to your DM inbox as plain text. All messy formatting will be taken out, making the email experience 1000x better."

Responding to Finn, Musk tweeted, "Pretty much."
