The combined capacity of the major lakes supplying water to Mumbai has reached 40.22%, showing significantly improved water availability, the data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed on Monday.
The seven main lakes supplying water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vehar, and Tulsi. These lakes are located in Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik districts.
An important source for Mumbai's water needs, these lakes rely heavily on rainfall to recharge. The early arrival of the southwest monsoon this year has raised the water levels in these lakes, bringing them up to 40.22%, compared to just 5.46% last year.

Overall, these lakes currently hold 5,82,175 million litres of usable water out of a total capacity of 14,47,363 million litres, the BMC data at 6 a.m. on June 30 showed. Modak Sagar has the highest level of usable water, at 53.48% of its total capacity. Meanwhile, Bhatsa remains the lowest, holding just over 34%.
AdvertisementIn the past 24 hours, all seven lakes have received decent rainfall as well, the data showed. Upper Vaitarna recorded the highest at 28 mm, followed by Middle Vaitarna with 26 mm of rainfall. Vehar lake received the lowest rainfall at just 3 mm.
Rainfall Prediction For Mumbai
The water levels in these lakes are expected to surge further in the coming days due to more rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, Thane and Nashik will continue to receive heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Mumbai will continue to experience moderate rainfall, with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places on July 2. As a result, the weather agency has put the city on a yellow alert for that day. Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail in Thane.
Meanwhile, Nashik will experience light to moderate rainfall during this period. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the ghats of Nashik for July 2, anticipating "heavy to very heavy" rainfall at isolated locations.
