Water supply will remain suspended for 36 hours in parts of Thane from midnight on Thursday, October 22, to noon on Saturday, October 24, Thane Municipal Corporation announced on Wednesday

The main reason for the suspension of water is due to a shutdown at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation's (MIDC) Jambhul water treatment plant.

The shutdown will affect areas under the Diva, Mumbra and Kalwa ward committees, along with select localities in Wagle and Majiwada-Manpada.

The water cut comes amid lower post-monsoon rainfall, the impact of El Niño and the early withdrawal of the monsoon in October.

In view of these factors, a 10% water cut has been planned in line with the state government's decision.

During the shutdown, water supply will be completely stopped across Diva and Kalwa, as well as in Mumbra, except for some parts of Wards 26 and 31.

In Wagle, the affected areas will include Rupadevi Pada, Kisan Nagar No. 2 and Nehru Nagar. Kolseht Khalcha Gaon under the Majiwada-Manpada ward committee will also face a disruption.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has warned that the water supply may remain at low pressure for one to two days after the shutdown ends.

Residents have been urged to store sufficient water in advance and use it sparingly during the disruption.

The Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) also announced on Wednesday about the fixed weekly water supply shutdowns in the city, citing a weak post-monsoon spell and the risk of an El Nino-hit rainy season next year.

Water will remain off for 18 hours every week on account of the STEM Authority supply and for 36 hours on account of the MIDC supply.

NDTV Profit reported on Saturday, October 17, that a third of Mumbai's water never reaches taps. According to the report, Mumbai needs about 4,600 million litres a day (MLD) but receives about 4,100 MLD.

The main problem is that around 1,394 MLD of this, or 34%, is lost to leakage and theft. The city's pipeline network runs to nearly 6,000 km, and much of it is decades old.

Where Does Mumbai's Water Come From?

The city depends on seven lakes: Tulsi, Vihar, Bhatsa, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna. They fill during the monsoon, and the stored water is sent through the pipeline network to homes and businesses.

With weak rain this year and higher temperatures speeding up evaporation, the BMC imposed the cut to make stocks last until September next year.
