Tamil Nadu, Chennai Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert As State Battles Heavy Rains

Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall starting Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in its latest bulletin. According to the IMD bulletin on Dec. 12, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are very likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Dec. 12, 13, 16 and 17 due to the northeast monsoon spell that is entering its next phase.

“Thunderstorm with intermittent spells of heavy rain is likely to occur in some areas,” the Chennai Met Office said in a bulletin at 11:30 am on Thursday.

“The well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar and neighbourhood. The associated upper-air cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards South Tamil Nadu and weaken gradually during the next 12 hours,” the IMD said in its all-India forecast on the day.

Chennai, Madurai, Cuddalore, Coimbatore and other areas are set to witness heavy rainfall on Thursday. On the other hand, districts like Thanjavur are likely to see very heavy rains on Thursday.
