Around 40 people were hospitalised following a chlorine gas leak at a water purification plant in Nagpur's Godhni area on Monday. The incident occurred at the Godhni Nagar Panchayat's water treatment plant, where the gas leak left several people complaining of breathing difficulties, according to NDTV.
Authorities reported that the leakage occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. from a 900-kg cylinder of chlorine gas at the Godhani Nagar Panchayat Water Treatment Plant. The gas escaped into the nearby residential areas of Fago Patil Layout and Nag Mandir Tekdi, causing multiple individuals to experience coughing and breathing difficulties.
According to the report, around 8-10 employees working at the plant and 20-25 residents from the surrounding area were affected and taken to hospitals for medical treatment.

Four to five people are being treated in intensive care, while the remaining affected individuals are undergoing treatment at hospitals.
Police, fire brigade and NDRF teams reached the site and began rescue and containment efforts. NDRF personnel entered the facility in protective suits to deal with the chlorine leak.
As a precaution, authorities evacuated nearby residents through the early morning hours amid concerns over exposure to the gas. Some residents reported breathing difficulties, coughing and eye irritation following the leak, which occurred during the night, NDTV reported.
Officials are expected to assess the cause of the leak and the extent of its impact as emergency and safety operations continue.
