Mumbai faced strong pre-monsoon rains on Tuesday evening, with downpour being recorded in several pockets of the maximum city.
Internet users took to social media to share the visuals of thunder and lightning in parts of the city. Mumbai and its adjoining suburbs had been reeling under overcast conditions, with extreme humidity, over the past couple of days.
The rainfall is expected to provide much-needed relief to the city residents, who have been experiencing a scathing summer season so far.
The downpour comes much ahead of the onset of southwest monsoon in coastal Maharashtra. The rainfall-laden winds are expected to arrive in Kerala on May 27, according to the India Meteorological Department's forecast.
After the onset in Kerala, monsoon usually takes another 10-12 days to arrive in Mumbai.

May 20, 2025AdvertisementApart from Mumbai, heavy downpour in Bengaluru for the past 36 hours threw life out of gear on Tuesday. According to the India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru has received about 30 mm rain in the last 24 hours.
The city had recorded 105 mm rain on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday morning. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and a yellow alert at various places across Karnataka on Tuesday.

While a red alert has been sounded for the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode, an orange alert has been issued for Palakkad, Malappuram, and Thrissur.
According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the districts where a red alert has been issued are likely to receive 'extremely heavy rainfall', which refers to rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours, as per a report by news agency PTI.
