The Indian government is putting in place a digital backbone to track green hydrogen from the point of production to final utilisation, as it gears up for large-scale deployment later this decade. MNRE Secretary Santosh Sarangi told NDTV Profit that the government is working on a dedicated portal that will trace how green hydrogen is manufactured, certified and eventually consumed across sectors.

The move follows the rollout of India's green hydrogen certification framework, under which definitions and carbon emission thresholds have already been notified. “We are now working on a portal for tracking and tracing green hydrogen manufacturing and utilisation,” Sarangi said, adding that the system will be ready well before commercial-scale plants come online between 2028 and 2029.

Green hydrogen is seen as the next big growth engine for renewable energy, with India targeting production of 5 million tonnes annually. That ambition will require nearly 120 GW of renewable capacity. Indian companies have already begun tying up overseas offtake agreements, including AM Green's partnership with Juniper and deals by Acme and L&T with global buyers.

On the domestic front, MNRE is pushing for large-scale usage. The ministry recently floated a green ammonia tender for 7.24 lakh tonnes, which discovered the lowest green ammonia price globally, an early signal of India's cost competitiveness.
Sarangi said green hydrogen and renewable energy are critical for keeping power affordable and reliable. Solar and wind tariffs have fallen sharply over the years, touching Rs 2.4 per unit, strengthening India's case for clean energy-led growth.
