Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has hiked Metro rail fares in the city by about 50%. The decision, effective February 9, was made based on the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), submitted on Dec. 16, 2024.
Following the fare revision, maximum prices have been increased from Rs 60 to Rs 90, while the minimum balance required for smart cards has been increased from Rs 50 to Rs 90.
Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike Details
Under the revised fare system, the cost of Bengaluru Metro travel between 0-2 km is Rs 10, 2-4 km is Rs 20, 4-6 km is Rs 30, 6-8 km is Rs 40, 8-10 km is Rs 50, 10-12 km is Rs 60, 15-20 km is Rs 70, 20-25 km is Rs 80 and 25-30 km or more is Rs 90.

"As per section 37 of the Metro Railway O&M Act, recommendations made by the Fare Fixation Committee shall be binding on the Metro Railway Administration," read the official press release.
According to BMRCL, an additional 5% discount will be offered on smart cards during off-peak hours, making the total discount 10% ,based on the time of entry into the Metro system. Off-peak hours on weekdays are referred to as travel before 8 a.m., between 12 and 4 p.m. and after 9 p.m.

The fare hike comes after a 15% increase in government bus fares in Karnataka.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has criticised the Karnataka government's decision to hike metro fares.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Karnataka Govt, instead of incentivising public transport and discouraging private vehicles, is doing the exact opposite with the Metro Fare Hike. Bengaluru metro fares should be at par with other metros in the country. While commuters in Delhi pay Rs 30 for a 12 km ride, Bengaluru will have to pay Rs 60 - Double the amount. A 50% hike, with max fare going from ₹60 to ₹90 is totally unjustified."
