All private and public sector banks in Tamil Nadu will be closed on Jan. 16 on the occasion of Uzhavar Thirunal. The day is celebrated in the state to express gratitude to harvesters at the end of the harvest season.

Banks in all other states of India will remain open on Thursday, according to the RBI bank holiday calendar for 2025.

Bank Holidays in January

The first month of 2025, January, had eight bank holidays apart from the ones falling on Saturdays and Sundays. Lenders across 10 states in India, including Tamil Nadu, had shut their branches on Jan. 14 due to Makar Sankranti.

Additionally, banks in Tamil Nadu were closed on Jan. 15 in observance of Thiruvalluvar Day, which marks the birth anniversary of the renowned poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar.

The Jan. 16 holiday essentially means that banks in Tamil Nadu are closed for three consecutive days.

There is only one remaining bank holiday in January. Banks will be closed on Jan. 23 in West Bengal, Odisha and Tripura due to the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Vir Surendrasai Jayanti.

Bank holidays in India are classified into three main categories, as per the RBI bank holiday calendar. These are — Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays and Banks' Closing of Accounts.

Apart from national and regional holidays, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays of the month. 

What Is Uzhavar Thirunal?

Uzhavar Thirunal, celebrated primarily in Tamil Nadu on the third day of the Pongal festival, is a day dedicated to honouring and expressing gratitude to farmers for their hard work and contributions. This year, it is being celebrated on Jan. 16.
