India is set to host the next edition of the AI Action Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, as the Paris edition of the event drew to a close.

Modi, in his address at the summit, spoke about how India is building its own large language models, alongside developing computing capacity and expanding access to artificial intelligence.

S Krishnan, secretary for India's Ministry of Electronics and IT, which looks at AI from a policy perspective in the country, added that the tone of this two-day summit around AI was a "lot more positive".

He added that India's emphasis "has not been on the regulation of AI and this point was broadly appreciated by a number of world and technology leaders present here today."

"India has endorsed the leaders' statement on inclusive and sustainable AI and given a commitment to AI for the public interest which were the two major outcomes of this summit...India has supported the establishment of the AI foundation...India has also joined the coalition on sustainable AI ensuring AI's alignment with environmental and sustainable development goals," he said.

Krishnan, while briefing the press, also noted that the next AI summit that will be hosted by India will be held "later this year".

India's AI Action Summit chairship follows its Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence chairship in 2023. India also sought to expand GPAI's membership, as it continues to take the helm of being a voice for the Global South.
