In a story that feels straight out of a film, seven pet dogs in China have captured hearts online after escaping alleged thieves and finding their way back home, together.

The incident took place in Jilin province, where the dogs were reportedly stolen from three households in the same village, allegedly for the illegal dog meat trade. But what followed was nothing short of extraordinary. The group managed to break free from a moving transport truck on the Changshuang Expressway and embarked on a journey of nearly 17 kilometres over two days, navigating highways and open fields without separating.

A video of the dogs walking in formation along a busy road first surfaced on March 16, recorded by a passerby identified as Lu. The clip quickly went viral, not just for the escape but for the way the dogs moved as a unit. A Corgi appeared to lead from the front, frequently turning back as if checking on the others. A Golden Retriever walked along the edge, almost like a guard, while an injured German Shepherd limped at the centre, surrounded and protected by the group.

Lu, who tried to guide them to safety, later told local media, “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs.” He shared the video on Douyin (a popular short video social platform like TikTok), urging authorities to help. As the video went viral, volunteers stepped in to help, even deploying drones to track the dogs and make sure they reached home safely.

By March 19, all seven dogs had been reunited with their owners, bringing relief and joy. One owner said, “We are so lucky they came back, not to be eaten,” while another praised her Corgi's intelligence and ability to lead the group home.

The story has since gone massively viral, clocking over 230 million views in China and sparking emotional reactions worldwide. One user wrote, “They stuck together, trusted each other, and found their way home like a little family.” Another joked, “Meanwhile humans get lost with Google Maps… but a corgi leads 6 homies 17 km through highways like it's nothing.”

Beyond the emotional story, the incident also brings attention to the issue of pet theft in parts of China. Although it is illegal, such cases still happen, partly because dog farming is expensive, leading some suppliers to rely on stray or stolen pets as a cheaper option.

For now, this story gently reminds us of the loyalty, instinct, and deep bond animals share—not just with humans, but with each other, in ways that truly touch the heart.
