LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky has said that while artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the workplace, there are key human capabilities that it simply cannot replace, especially as young professionals navigate an evolving job market.

Speaking to CNBC, Roslansky stressed that even as AI automates routine and technical tasks, the defining edge for workers will come from qualities that machines cannot replicate.

In his remarks, Roslansky outlined what he called the “5 Cs” — curiosity, courage, creativity, compassion and communication — as the core skills that will remain critical in the AI era. He explained that while AI can assist with execution and efficiency, it lacks the deeper human instinct required to question, connect and create meaning in complex situations.

"AI can generate possibilities based on patterns,” Roslansky said, adding, “humans decide which ones matter.” He emphasised that judgement remains firmly in the human domain, particularly when it comes to making decisions involving uncertainty and risk. “Only humans can decide what risk is worth taking,” he said, underlining the limits of machine-led decision-making.

Expanding on the role of these human skills, Roslansky noted that qualities like curiosity and creativity will become even more valuable as AI handles repetitive work. “The people who are going to win are the ones who are asking better questions,” he said, pointing to the growing importance of critical thinking in an AI-assisted workplace. He added that communication, too, will play a defining role, as “being able to clearly articulate ideas and bring others along” cannot be automated in the same way as technical tasks.

Roslansky also highlighted the importance of adaptability and emotional intelligence in a fast-changing environment. “Things are changing faster than ever before,” he said, stressing that workers need to be comfortable navigating uncertainty rather than relying on fixed skill sets. He reiterated that AI can support decision-making, but cannot replace human accountability, noting that “at the end of the day, a human is still responsible for the outcome.”

Drawing on insights from LinkedIn data, Roslansky noted that a significant portion of job skills is expected to evolve in the coming years, driven by the rapid adoption of AI technologies. This, he said, makes it even more important for workers to invest in adaptable, human-centric abilities rather than relying solely on technical expertise
