The selling comes as investors assess the outlook for gold demand and jewellery purchases, with developments around gold consumption adding to the market's focus on the sector.

In a post on Instagram, Modi urged citizens to avoid travelling abroad merely for leisure or hosting weddings overseas, and instead encouraged the idea of “Weddings in India”.

He also said citizens should refrain from buying gold unless absolutely necessary.

“The more we emphasize ‘Swadeshi' and self-reliance,” Modi said, the more confident he was that India would hand over a “Viksit Bharat” to its youth by the time the country marks 100 years of independence.
