The stock of usable water in Mumbai's supply lakes has increased to more than 43% of their total capacity, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data showed on Wednesday. Together, the seven lakes can hold up to 14,47,363 million litres of usable water.

On Wednesday, the capacity of the seven lakes stood at 43.46% or 6,29,032 million litres. The seven main lakes supplying water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi. These are located across Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts and rely heavily on rainfall to recharge.

The arrival of early southwest monsoon in India has significantly contributed to the surge in water levels of these lakes. A year ago, these lakes contained just 7.15% usable water of the total capacity.
