Following his election as leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the Assam Assembly, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday approached Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to seek permission to form the government in the State. The move sets the stage for Sarma to continue as Chief Minister for a second straight term. The new Council of Ministers will be sworn in on May 12. The notification issued by Raj Bhavan stated that in accordance with Article 164(1) of the Constitution, the Governor named Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam.

In West Bengal, the BJP recorded a historic victory. At a high-profile event attended by top BJP and NDA leaders, Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday took oath as the new Chief Minister. The swearing-in ceremony was organised at Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah.

The 57-year-old Adhikari registered wins in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur during the recently held Assembly elections. He handed former CM Mamata Banerjee a defeat in Bhabanipur by over 15,000 votes.

In Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister on Sunday morning at a ceremony held at Nehru Indoor Stadium. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office. Nine ministers were inducted into the new Cabinet, including KG Arunraj, Aadhav Arjuna, N Anand, Selvi S Keerthana and Dr TK Prabhu.

Chief Ministers from the BJP currently hold power in 16 states and one union territory (UT). Overall, 22 states and UTs are administered by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), of which the BJP is a member.
