Several eastern states have been placed on high alert as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal strengthens into a severe cyclone. The cyclonic storm has been named 'Montha'. As per the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to cross Kakinada in coastal Andhra Pradesh by Oct. 28 evening or night.
"Continuing to move further north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening/night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

How Cyclones Are Named?
A bunch of countries from Asia and the Indian Ocean, including Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan and the Maldives, came together in 2000 to introduce a system for naming cyclones within the region.

According to WMO, when a new name is chosen, several criteria are taken into account. The name should be concise and straightforward, making it simple to mention in conversation. Pronunciation must be uncomplicated, and the meaning should to be suitable across various languages. The name has to be distinctive and there should not be a repetition of names already assigned elsewhere.
