Cyclonic Storm Montha Likely To Hit India's East Coast On Oct. 28: How Are Cyclones Named?

Several eastern states have been placed on high alert as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal strengthens into a severe cyclone. The cyclonic storm has been named 'Montha'. As per the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to cross Kakinada in coastal Andhra Pradesh by Oct. 28 evening or night.

"Continuing to move further north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening/night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.
