India is expected to see a large-scale shutdown on Feb. 12, as multiple central trade unions, supported by farmer groups, have called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh. As per reports, over 30 crore workers will join the protest, which is expected to affect banks, government offices, markets and transport services across the country.

A coalition of 10 central trade unions, which include INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC, has announced the nationwide strike on Feb. 12.
As per reports, the trade unions are protesting against four new labour codes introduced in 2025, which replaced 29 earlier labour laws. They say that these codes weaken worker protections, undermine job security and make it easier for employers to hire and dismiss staff. Concerns have also been raised about privatisation, wage-related issues and gaps in social security coverage.
Strike notices have reportedly been issued across most sectors, with preparations already underway. Among the unions' primary demands are the repeal of the four labour codes and their associated rules, withdrawal of the Draft Seed Bill, the Electricity Amendment Bill and the SHANTI Act (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India). They are also calling for the reinstatement of MGNREGA and the scrapping of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025.
Will Banks Join The Protest?
Despite the strike, neither banks nor the Reserve Bank of India have declared the day a bank holiday. This means branches are expected to remain open, though operations may be partially disrupted. Customers may experience delays in services at various bank branches. Online banking and ATMs are likely to continue functioning, though minor interruptions are possible. Private banks may operate normally, but service availability could vary by location.
Public sector banks are expected to see some disruption. Many major bank unions, including the All-India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), AIBOA, and BEFI, have called on their members to participate.
Farmer Groups Step In
Farmer organisations are expected to join rallies in multiple states, potentially increasing the scale of the protests. Authorities are preparing for disruptions and larger public gatherings.
With millions of workers and farmers likely taking to the streets, citizens are advised to prepare in advance for possible disruptions in travel, banking and essential services on Feb. 12.
