The NSE Nifty 50 ended 1.14% or 263.05 points down at 22,829.15 and the BSE Sensex closed 1.08% or 824.29 points down at 75,366.17.

Share prices of ICICI Bank, Britannia Industries, M&M, HUL and SBI were the top gainers among the Nifty stocks.

Among the losers in the Nifty were shares of HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Hindalco Industries and Shriram Finance.

All the 12 sectors on the NSE ended in the red, with the Nifty Media, IT, Metal, Pharma and Energy being the top losers.
The market breadth was skewed in favour of the sellers as 3,518 stocks declined, 598 advanced and 118 remained unchanged on the BSE.

The broader markets underperformed the benchmark indices as the BSE MidCap ended 2.68% down and the SmallCap ended at 3.51% lower.
