French carmaker Renault on Thursday said it was not considering a tie up with Bajaj Auto in its Chennai manufacturing venture along with Nissan.
"Contrary to reports in a section of the media today, we wish to state very emphatically, that there have been no talks with Bajaj Auto to partner us in the Chennai project," Renault India said in a statement.
The Chennai facility is a 50:50 joint venture between Renault and Nissan, which is being set up by Renault Nissan Automotive India at an investment of 700 million euro (over Rs 4,500 crore) to produce four lakh passenger vehicles for both the carmakers.
The company, however, said it is in talks with erstwhile partner Mahindra & Mahindra for Chennai facility to facilitate the distribution of Renault cars manufactured at the plant through the M&M distribution network.
" What has surprised us is that most of the media reports are either speculative or unsubstantiated," the statement said.
Renault Nissan has a joint venture with Bajaj to produce ultra low-cost car, the manufacturing unit for which would be set up at Chakan with a capacity of four lakh units per annum.
The French carmaker has a 49:51 JV with M&M for the passenger car 'Logan'.
