Just months before the launch of Tata’s small car Nano, auto major Maruti Suzuki organized a rural car fair in Singur smack in the heart of Nano’s national production base.

Well, this is one way for the country's largest carmaker to take on the imminent battle with Tata Motors.

The idea was simple that put on show the company's vast product portfolio and shell out the good deals to hook buyers picking up on the strong loyalty base it has built up over the past few decades.

Maruti has been organizing rural car fests to tap into the semi urban and rural areas where sales of entry cars have started to show some strength over the past couple of years.

The company has been offering special deals under its panchayat scheme and the fair also features a special finance desk to explain the deals to prospective buyers.

The three day fair has got Maruti impressive footfalls and on the first day itself 20 cars were sold. The lack of car showrooms in these areas see fairs like this one becoming quite a hit.

The panchayat scheme has been gathering steam and getting a tremendous response across India. Maruti has sold 32,000 vehicles through this route so far with 1000 cars sold in West Bengal itself.
